Brenner Oil Group

Questions & Answers

Q. What is the benefit of Natural Gas vs. Propane? Can I get either of these from Brenner?
The most significant benefit is cost. Natural gas costs $12.18 per million btu vs. Propane which costs $20.47 per million btu. Another benefit of Natural Gas is the delivery system. Natural Gas is direct to the user were Propane is delivered by truck into a tank at the users location which then either the buyer or seller has to monitor inventory and order as needed. Brenner does not currently sell or deliver Propane or Natural Gas.
Q. Why do gas prices fluctuate so much?
There are many reasons that cause gas to fluctuate from Geo-political and weather to simple supply and demand. I believe there are three main reasons that should be at the top of the list.
The first would be Supply and demand. Supply and demand can be affected by available Crude Oil for making refined products such as gasoline. The petroleum infrastructure needs to operate at levels to meet demand. If it does not a shortage will occur which in turn will cause prices to increase. Demand is a good indicator on the health of the world economy. When demand is up it could also put pressure on inventories which can cause price spikes.
The second factor that affects volatility in prices is that Crude oil and refined products are traded as commodities. Energy has become an asset class. Investors from privately held portfolios to 401k funds buy and trade contracts on the NYMEX for their clients.
The third main influence is Retail strategy. The convenience store owner prices gas on a number of different factors that range from their cost to competitive pressure.
Q. What does oil have to do with gas?
Gasoline is a product made from Crude Oil. When the cost of Crude Oil increases typically so does gasoline. There are situations when there is a disconnect between the two in price relationship. Crude Oil prices have gone down while gas prices increase. This usually occurs because there is an ample supply of Crude but the inability by refiners to turn it into gasoline. There are many reasons for this but the two most common are weather and maintenance related which take a refinery off line
